The November study, published in Science, examined COVID-19 infection and deaths by vaccination status of more than 780,000 U.S. Veterans. Researchers from the Public Health Institute, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the University of Texas Health Science Center compared the vaccine’s effectiveness in March to that in September. They found that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine’s effectiveness against infection dropped to 43.3% from 86.9% after six months. The Moderna vaccine saw a similar decline, falling to 58....

In a letter published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers report that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was about 90% effective at preventing infections caused by the B.1.1.7 variant. The variant, which now accounts for two-thirds of the cases in the U.S., is highly infectious. Perhaps more significant is that against the B.1.351 variant, which scientists have worried is capable of evading most immune response, the vaccines protect against 75% of all infection....

Steve Ball, president of the Ottawa-Gatineau Hotel Association, said hotels in the area have seen a number of protesters extend their bookings or rebook for the coming weekend. This is seen by some as an indication that mask and vaccine mandates protests could be prolonged. “There have been reports that guests have extended their stay and some have rebooked for the weekend,” Bell told Newsweek. “This is to be expected and shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone....

John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters that Congo has been unable to distribute its AstraZeneca vaccine doses from COVAX and that there is a five-week period to have them transported to other countries. The Army Guard reported that it retained 116 percent of its 2021 goal, with the Air Guard reporting similar figures, according to the Associated Press.
