Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 first released on the PlayStation Portable in 2007 and follows Zack Fair, a character referenced multiple times in the 1997 JRPG but whose story was never fully told in the original game. Crisis Core follows Zack as he rises through the ranks of SOLDIER, meeting characters such as Cloud Strife and Sephiroth, shedding light on elements of FF7’s narrative while being set years before it.

Square Enix has been adamant in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion’s marketing that the game is “more than a remaster,” featuring fully rerecorded voice acting featuring the cast of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and brand-new visuals rebuilt on Unreal Engine 4. Given the intricate reworking of the visuals and gameplay, it’s no surprise that Crisis Core Reunion’s technical performance is more on par with modern titles, and a performance breakdown has now revealed that while the game will be 4K/60fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X, last-gen consoles will run the game at 1080p/30fps, except Xbox One X, which will run the game at 4K.
Nintendo Switch players will experience Crisis Core at a maximum resolution of 720p both in docked and handheld modes, and while Xbox Series S will receive a day 1 patch brining the game to 60 frames-per-second playback, the unpatched version is capped at 30. Finally, the Steam release features a slew of graphical and performance options, including the ability to run the game at 120fps. Square Enix has claimed that the frame-rates may be variable on some platforms, however the listed figures are the maximum frame-rate outputs.
The vastly different performance metrics reemphasize that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is far more than just a simple PSP port, and it will be interesting to see how close each version comes to these performance targets when the game releases next month.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion releases on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 13th 2022.
