Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 was originally a PSP game that served as a prequel to the wildly popular 1997 JRPG. Released in 2007, Crisis Core had never made the jump to platforms outside the PSP until the announcement of Crisis Core Reunion. This remake should tie into the overarching Final Fantasy 7 Remake story and be a good primer for the upcoming FF7 Rebirth. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion has already showcased some impressive graphical upgrades, bringing it closer to modern standards. However, Square Enix intends to expand further and improve the game with more than visual updates.

A new Twitter post from the official Final Fantasy 7 account has given fans a brief rundown of everything new coming to Crisis Core Reunion. The list of updates includes an improved camera system, optimized UI, a menu-based battle system, new music arrangements, and full voice acting for previously text-only scenes. All of these improvements should be welcome additions to Crisis Core, making the game more accessible and enjoyable on modern platforms. One of the most notable updates is the menu-based combat system, but the full extent of what that means is unclear for now.
Footage from the initial Crisis Core Reunion trailer suggests that combat will be sticking close to the original gameplay design from 2007. However, the mention of a menu-based combat system could allude to the game also featuring a semi-turn-based system akin to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Otherwise, the rest of these improvements patch up some of the most significant issues with the original Crisis Core, like the stiff camera rotation due to the PSP only having one joystick.
However, some fans do appear to be upset at the voice-over updates to Crisis Core Reunion. Many of the original voice actors will not be reprising their roles for the upcoming game, and some fans would prefer if Rick Gomez voiced Zack Fair again for Reunion. Crisis Core is the one Final Fantasy game that puts Zack at center stage, and many have a strong admiration for Gomez’s voice work in that game. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is anticipated to release this year, so fans will likely receive more information about the game soon and see how well Zack Fair fares in his own remake when it launches.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion releases Winter 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
