Since its release in the first half of 2022, Elden Ring has been a hotbed for hidden details that many players have come across while playing the game. From hidden locations to secret references, the game has been a source of many surprises for a lot of gamers who have played the title. Recently, another gamer thought they had discovered yet another secret by finding a moving statue. However, after further investigation, it appears that the statue’s movement is caused by something completely different.

A Reddit user who goes by NarooHS posted two separate times to the Elden Ring subreddit to showcase their discovery. One post is a series of photos while the other post is a video demonstrating the statue’s movement. Although the statue does indeed give the appearance of moving, some comments on the post reveal that the statue is not moving but is actually the product of developers lowering the detail of the statue once a player has traveled a certain distance away from the object. Unfortunately, this is not another hidden Elden Ring detail, but it’s still a very interesting look into what developers do in order to save frame rate.
The further a player gets away from the statue, the less detail it has, and in this case it gives the statue the appearance of moving its head due to the transition of lessening the object’s polygons. One commenter on the video NarooHS posted states that something similar can be noticed when exploring the Forge of Giants. With Elden Ring having a reputation for hiding secrets it’s no surprise why NarooHS thought that they had discovered something new.
Having a vast and incredibly detailed world is just one of the reasons why Elden Ring broke records at The Game Awards. Due to that kind of notoriety, many gamers have probably experienced similar situations where they believed they were uncovering a new secret only for it to be something completely normal. Although the reasoning behind the illusion of a moving statue isn’t the most exciting explanation it gives a fascinating insight into the techniques developers use in order to give players the best experience possible while exploring a game’s world.
Elden Ring is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
